Fun Date Ideas

Focusing on your significant other’s hobbies and passions provides all the inspiration you need for a creative date. It’s easy to spend money on taking someone out to a fancy dinner or a movie, but these types of dates are not particularly original!

Read about Sue’s junk yard date with her boyfriend:

Near where we used to live in California, there was a small area called Rainbow which boasted a large, well, what amounted to a large salvage and junk yard. Knowing my fondness for nosing through secondhand stores and stores with unusual items, my then boyfriend (now husband) told me one day to grab my camera. He didn’t tell me where we were going, intending to surprise me when we arrived. He did surprise me when we exited the freeway to Rainbow and drove up to the salvage yard. We found any number of oddities, from cacti made of horseshoes to old wagons that looked like they rode straight out of old Westerns. I photographed a fake skeleton dressed like a cowboy, holding a can of beer that looked to be at least 50 years old. The junkyard was wonderful; it felt like something out of a Tim Burton film. Claw-foot bathtubs, large arches made of iron—it was the place that time forgot. We had been poking around for nearly an hour, and the sun was disappearing behind the trees; making our way to the back, we heard the sudden sound of dogs barking. A man came out and politely informed us that we were there well past closing time! We made our apologies and left, but not without a camera full of fun photos. To plan an unusual and spontaneous date, it’s vital to keep your partner’s idiosyncratic joys in mind. Focus on the interests that make your partner truly unique; it’s easy enough to plan dinner at a restaurant, but often very generic, as well! When planning a date around a partner’s particular passion, you can plan a memorable and enjoyable date.
